I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.
Today I translated this verse on my last Greek final.
It has been a crazy ride these past 4 semesters. For the last 2 years I've devoted many hours to this class. I remember the first class. I was terrified. I sat by Alex Vance. (What was I thinking?) I remember practicing the alphabet in all my other classes. I remember learning "o eis ei omen ete ousi" and thinking how cultish we all sounded reciting it. Now I could recite it backwards in my sleep. As well as its three counterparts. And I know about things like cognate accusatives (fought the good fight), genitive absolutes, and periphrastic construction. I can identify a participle and tell you its usage. I can give you case, gender, number, and declension on any noun. I can tell you that there are no augments outside of the indicative mode. I learned that when you "study a little every night" it really does pay off. (who knew?! and yet Greek is the only class I'll apply that to.) I learned that studying with others really can work. I learned how to study, period. But not just Greek- I learned to study the Word of God. I see it in a different light now. It's beautiful. I am learning to love it. This class has really changed my life. Some of the lessons I learned I will probably never be able to put into words. I learned about relationships and communication. I learned about leadership and trust. I learned about worship and responsibility. It's been incredible. I will never forget these things.
What I will miss most, however, will be the people.
Josh McCormick, Josh Sheehan, Mark Cooper, Erin Lambert, Alex Vance, Jay Mullins, Andrew Hollingsworth, Robert Leavell, Chase Caldwell, Ben Van Horn, Missy Sandlin, and of course Big G!
After 4 semesters of class with people (2 of them at 8 am) you really get to know them. We've seen each other through some tough times. We've failed tests, we've forgotten vocab quizzes, we've been thoroughly convinced there's a future subjunctive, we've eaten lunch together, we've seen 2 am roll around, we've had sleepless nights, we've made t-shirts, we've laughed, we've cried, we've struggled, but all in all, we've fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith. God has different things in store for us all- marriage, Yale, France, ministry, seminary, military, and more school. But we're all prepared in a way we would not have been without this class and the individuals in it. I never knew that signing up for Greek 101 would bring me to this place, but I am so glad it did. (Thanks so much for not letting me quit, Big G!)
So this is where it ends.
"Just a few more hours for Big G and I'll fly away. Even though it's all still Greek to me, I'll fly away. I'll fly away oh glory, I'll fly away (in the morning.) Then I'll shout Hallelujah! by and by, I'll fly away!"
Love you guys. Thanks for blessing my life.
P.S. Wes Stewart is awesome. and i'm a bad friend. there ya go.
I'm sad I couldn't continue with y'all. (This is Allison Rushing btw.) I'm so glad I took the one semester I did...although I still shudder when I think of the all nighters I pulled for that class. Because of the one semester I took at MC I'm actually going to make an A in my Greek class this semester! I've actually understood it this time around. haha Remember that time Alex and I made a video at 4:30a.m. while we were studying Greek and made you waste 8 min. of your life by watching it? hahaha Good times. Oh Greek. Glad you made it through! Can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss that Greek class. ha (And I've held to my promise that I would never drink another 5 hour energy drink again. ha) -Allison-
ReplyDeleteI like Wes Stewart.
ReplyDeleteme too, not wes stewart...
ReplyDeleteand Thanks Allison! I'm so glad you are making it through seminary greek so well! That's awesome! We miss you. Alex and I shared a really sad look when Big G called your name as one of those who started with us back in the day. Good times...
Aw...well at least I didn't give up Greek totally! I'll be taking syntax and exegesis in the fall for Greek. I have my final for elementary Greek tuesday. Good times for sure in Big G's greek. I don't know if I've ever worked so hard for a class.
